Metropolis (2001) | Movie Review | Second in Metropolis Series
Monday Jun 08, 2020
Monday Jun 08, 2020
At the end of the 1940's, Japanese artist, Osamu Tezuka released a comic titled Metropolis. He received slight inspiration from Fritz Lang's 1927 sci-fi masterpiece, but over 50 years later, a critically acclaimed team of Japanese filmmakers decided to adapt Tezuka and Lang's vision together in one truly remarkable anime. Despite this anime film not being as famous as the likes of Ghost in the Shell, Akira and Your Name. this hidden classic uniquely brings to life the thoughts of German impressionism from 80 years past, Biblical symbolism and Eastern theology in one mind-bending presentation. Join Corbin and Allen as they review Osamu Tezuka's Metropolis!
Join the discussion-Comment below! Question after the show: Would you rather watch the 1927 metropolis or the 2001 metropolis? Or are they just too different?

Metropolis (1927) | Movie Review | First in Metropolis Series
Monday Jun 01, 2020
Monday Jun 01, 2020
93 years ago...yes, you read that correctly! Nearly a century ago, German director Fritz Lang brought a monumental vision to the silver screen. The scope and cost of the film was so epic that it nearly bankrupted the studio and was considered too dense for audiences at the time. Shockingly, in one of the first instances of studio interference, the complete cut of the film was butchered and seemingly lost forever. In 2010, the full cut was found, restored and resurrected. Join Corbin and Allen as they bring you their review at long last of the film that started the science fiction/dystopian genre influencing both books and movies.

In 1927, German director Fritz Lang unleashed an astounding vision 100 years ahead of its time. Sadly, for the greater part of a century, the film, in its true form, was lost. In 2010 the complete Metropolis was found and restored. Join Corbin as he guides you through the history and impact of this monumental film. 19 years after the sleeper Japanese hit, Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade, South Korean filmmakers decided to retool the anime into a live action film. If you live in the US, this is a 'Netflix Original Film' fully equipped with multiple language and subtitle options (but I say the original Korean is optimal). What is most shocking is the fact this property was remade. No one was asking for it and Jin-Roh doesn't have the international footprint like Ghost in the Shell or Akira. So is this remake a smart improvement on the original or just a pale imitation? Join Corbin and Allen as they review Illang: The Wolf Brigade to find out!
Join the discussion-Comment below! Question after the show: Do the Wolf Brigade outfits look better, worse, or the same compared to the anime? Why or why not?

Hot off the success of Ghost in the Shell, famed anime creator Mamoru Oshii returned as writer to finish his trilogy based on his Kerberos Panzer Cop manga. Instead of opting for a third live action installment, he chose breathtaking, realistic animation. Drawing from European folktales and Shakespearean plays, Oshii presents a stark alternate history of WWII Japan where civil war plays out amidst a star-crossed, fateful love story. Unlike Ghost in the Shell, Dragon Ball Z or Akira, not many remember this "lost anime film." 21 years after its release, it has landed on a number of free and premium streaming platforms causing it to gain a new audience. Should this anime stay lost or have we uncovered a forgotten gem? Join Corbin and Allen as they review Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade to find out!

Only 2 years after Nolan released his billion dollar film The Dark Knight, he seemed on track to do it again. While Inception came just shy of grossing a billion at the worldwide box office, it quickly became one of the most successful and beloved independent properties of all time; it also further bolstered Nolan as one of the most inventive storytellers of our generation. Both Corbin and Allen saw this in the theater opening weekend (in fact, Corbin saw it twice), but 10 years later has some of the creative charm worn off or is the dream world a delight to rediscover all over again? Join Corbin and Allen as they review Inception to find out!

3 years after audiences were begging for a sequel to Batman Begins, Christopher Nolan brought his vision of the dark knight and the clown prince of crime to the big screen. In the interim, audiences did get their Nolan fix albeit it in a mediocre performing period piece about warring magicians, but no one saw coming how massive a success The Dark Knight would be! Raking in over 1 billion dollars at the world-wide box office, at the time this was Nolan's biggest budget, widest release, greatest critical acclaim, biggest opening weekend and it garnered eight Academy Award nominations! Today, IMDb members have rated this the 4th greatest film of all time! But, 12 years later, does this dark take on the caped crusader hold up or has the cultural phenomenon worn off? Join Corbin and Allen as they review The Dark Knight to find out!

A mere 16 months after Nolan's blockbuster hit Batman Begins, he decided to take step back in time to create a twisted story about warring magicians at the turn of the century with a bit of historical fiction for good taste. The director stuck with Christian Bale (Batman) and Michael Kane (Alfred) but brought on Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) for good measure. With a smaller budget, smaller opening weekend, and smaller worldwide gross--audiences and critics left the theater (or never went) scratching their heads wondering why Nolan took a pit stop from the dark knight to create a long period piece. At the time audiences considered Batman Begins to be a far better movie, but time has been kind to this film; now, audiences view The Prestige the as 47th greatest film of all time. 14 years later do the twists and turns still enthrall Corbin and Allen or do they find the film just a bit stuffy? Join Corbin and Allen as they review The Prestige to find out!

3 years after the soft success of the murder-mystery remake of Insomnia, Nolan approached Warner Brothers with his idea of doing a Batman film. Considering Insomnia was produced by Warner Bros. and Nolan heard rumors they were looking to reboot the franchise after the abysmal Batman & Robin--the young director thought he could do it. Being Nolan's most expensive and highest profile film at the time--he had a lot to lose. Well...the rest is history folks. Batman Begins officially set Nolan on the map as the next greatest director of our time and thankfully his film scrubbed the bad taste out of everyone's mouth by bringing the caped crusader back into audiences good graces. 15 years later does the 7th theatrically released Batman film bring back all the nostalgia the 10 year old Allen and Corbin felt or is it just a fine installment in the long running series? Join Corbin and Allen as they review Batman Begins to find out!
Join the discussion-Comment below! Question after the show: Did you see Batman Begins in the theater? Was your memory positive or negative?
