The Desperate Hours (1955) | Movie Review | Fourth in Humphrey Bogart series
Monday Dec 17, 2018
Monday Dec 17, 2018
In 1955 audiences were shocked by one of the first mainstream films depicting the terrorizing of a family in their suburban home. Humphrey Bogart stars as escaped murderer, Glen Griffith, who holds a nuclear family hostage. Imagine Leave it to Beaver meets In Cold Blood. This film helped spawn the "home-invasion" sub-genre still popular today. Despite its frightening subject matter, the film was well-received by audiences at the time and today is highly regarded by critics. Corbin and Allen present their review of an often forgotten Bogart classic, The Desperate Hours.

The Treasure of the Sierra Madre received critical acclaim, yet confounded audiences with its dark twist and unconventional storytelling, but today it is regarded as one of the greatest films of all time. In 1941, Dashiell Hammet's novel, The Maltese Falcon, received its most famous big screen adaptation that many view as the first film noir and consider to be one of the greatest films of all time. Humphrey Bogart leads an all-star cast in an epic detective story that would garner three Academy Award nominations including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Adapted Screenplay. With slick writing, engaging performances, and a twisting plot there's no wonder The Maltese Falcon was a major hit and remains a beloved classic to this day. Corbin and Allen are excited to kick-off their Humphrey Bogart Retrospective series with their review of The Maltese Falcon.
